Common Standards Monitoring (Wales) - Overview

Notified features on SSSIs, Habitats and species in Annex I and II of the EC Habitats Directive, birds listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive, and features listed under Ramsar Convention. The scope includes terrestrial, freshwater and marine features, and encompasses both biodiversity and geodiversity SSSIs, SACs, SPAs and Ramsar sites throughout Wales Performance indicators are devised from JNCC generic guidance (http://www.jncc.gov.uk), modified to reflect local distinciveness and quantified to reflect the desired state of the feature. Assessments of these performance indicators are made using methods appropriate to the nature and scale of the feature and conclusions drawn about condition depending on whether performance indicators pass or fail. Information relevant to management is also collected. Together, the condition assessments and management information provide the basis for an assessment of conservation status.
